Fabrication for other Artists

Large, complex, heavy or otherwise ungainly art, particually art for public installation is often
produced by collaberative effort between artists, public institutions and the steel fabrication industry.

Within the industry, some fabricators develop the skills, knowledge and artistic eye
to realize these projects to the standards and specifications of the inceptive, designing artists.

Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun - Spirit of Our Ancestors on the Land

I am honoured to have worked on this magnificent sculputre by Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun.

My role was the installation of the steel components on the concrete and steel frame and designs and fabrication of the custom hardware needed to safely transport the sculpture to its site in Coal Harbour, Vancouver. I also fabricated and installed the stainless steel "staples" holding together the rock at the base, as well as underground support structures for the rock. In addition, I fabricated and installed the foremost orange coloured hair element in accordance with the artists guidance.

I had the opportunity to fabricate and install this whimisical tractor now residing at King George Hub in the city of Surrey, BC. The variety of materials in this project is surprising; cast iron wheel, aluminum moon, bronze animals, mild steel parts and "Corten" wheathering steel for most else which will form a rust patina, but then resist decay. As you might expect, getting everything into position was quite a feat, involving both machines and muscle.

Installed at the Rosemary Brown ice arena, this challenging fabrication came together over the course of months as each of the steel sections was joined and positioned, first with temporary braces and then with permanent welding. The sculputre had to be repostioned and rotated many times between the fabrication area and the final installation site. Quite a feat that these ribbons of steel seem so light and flighty!
